Henderson, Nev. – The City of Henderson Public Works, Parks and Recreation Department has attained full accreditation from the American Public Works Association (APWA). The city is the 128th accredited agency in the nation and the only agency in Nevada to hold active accreditation. APWA serves nearly 30,000 professionals in all aspects of public works, including personnel from local, county, state and federal agencies as well as private sector personnel.

“We achieved 100 percent compliance on all 369 applicable accreditation standards,” said Robert Herr, director, City of Henderson Public Works, Parks and Recreation Department. “In addition, our agency was identified as having nine national model best practices, which is quite an accomplishment for a first-time accredited agency. These outstanding results are possible thanks to the dedication of our hard-working team; an ongoing commitment to improving our operations and performance; and the full support of city leadership, our colleagues in every city department, and our residents.”

Accreditation is a voluntary approach to objectively review, verify and recognize compliance with recommended management practices, which provide a systematic method to evaluate every function within an organization. Each agency seeking accreditation must submit an application and self-evaluation, undergo an onsite evaluation by an APWA visitation team, and receive a final review by the APWA Accreditation Council.

Initial accreditation is valid for four years, with semi-annual updates required to demonstrate continuing compliance. A reaccreditation process then builds on an agency’s original accreditation to encourage continuous improvement with newly identified practices.
