Former Councilwoman Debra March was sworn in today as the new Mayor of Henderson. March was elected to the position in April of this year and replaces outgoing two term Mayor Andy Hafen.
“I am excited to begin working with this council, the city manager and staff to begin this new journey and take our city to the next level,” said March in remarks following her swearing-in ceremony.
Mayor March also unveiled a series of five priority areas that she will focus on during her first 100 days in office. These include:
Quality of Life
A Henderson resident for over 25 years, March has a long track record of service to the city and her community. March was appointed to represent Henderson’s Ward II residents on the City Council in July 2009 and was subsequently elected to full terms in April 2011 and April 2015. She was elected as the 13th Mayor of Henderson on April 4, 2017 and becomes only the second woman in the history of the city to hold that position.
March has been a Nevada resident for more than 40 years. After graduating from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), she served as a state park ranger in locations throughout Nevada, where she promoted the value of parks and open spaces for a healthy quality of life.
March moved to Southern Nevada as deputy administrator with the Nevada Real Estate Division, creating and implementing policies for responsible home ownership and served from 1996 to 2009 as director of UNLV’s Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies where she led efforts for the development of livable communities. From 2004 to 2009, she also served as a member of the City of Henderson Planning Commission
