Lisa's Landscape Corner:

-by Lisa Ortega, City of Henderson Urban Forester

This year we welcome spring on March 20! The Bradford Pears and Purple Leaf Plums are blooming and trees like the Fan Tex Ash are budding. Dr. Morris and the Master Gardeners out at the Cooperative Extension orchard have finishing pruning their fruit trees and grapes (if they are ever really done!) and I’m sure they are enjoying the blooming of various stone fruit trees. Spring welcomes longer day hours, warming temperatures and hails the emergence of new leaves and flowers. Ahhhh!

Shade for the summer is on the way. Now is the time to do an irrigation check to make sure your landscape is prepared for the dog days of summer that are quickly approaching. Run each and every valve to make sure they are watering in the correct location. Check for broken or missing heads and emitters and replace any cracked or damaged irrigation lines – being especially mindful of the black polyline. It can expand and shrink with the weather, making old glue joints susceptible to coming undone.

As you watch your leaves emerge, make sure you give an extra dose of water with the hose or by running the clock longer for a cycle or two. This first spring soak will help with the large task of leaf making, which requires extra water. But remember, not too wet... Give trees a drink about two feet deep; never water past the point that the water runs off the soil or turf. Instead, cut back on your watering time and add spurts of water consecutively, pushing the water down the soil to encourage deeply rooted turf and trees.

Happy landscaping!

Heads Up...

It has come to our attention that some older communities are having difficulty obtaining insurance due to wiring, circuits and plumbing that have not been upgraded.

If your community is approaching 30 or more years old, this may be something you want to research prior to your insurance renewal date.
