Henderson, Nev. – City Councilman Andy Hafen will be installed as the president of the Nevada League of Cities (NLC) this Saturday, October 7, at the 47th Annual Nevada League of Cities conference in Incline Village.
Hafen, a city councilman from the City of Henderson, was elected to the post and will replace outgoing NLC president, North Las Vegas City Councilwoman Stephanie Smith.
“The League is a valuable resource to the member organizations and I’m honored to work with them this year as the president,” said Hafen. “This is an organization that really works to help all of Nevada, from the big cities to our small towns. I really look forward to working with people from all across Nevada to help make our state and cities better.”
First elected in June of 1987, Hafen is the longest serving member of the Henderson City Council, where he represents Ward II. Hafen was born in Boulder City, Nevada and graduated from Basic High School in 1972. He received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1976.
Early in his career he worked as a clerk for the FBI and as an accountant for Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. He recently retired from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department where he was assigned to the Special Investigations Division for 23 years.
When Hafen was elected the City of Henderson had less than 60,000 residents. Today Henderson is the second largest city in Nevada and was recently named the 20th best city to live in nationally.
“We are proud of Andy and all he has done for our city,” said Henderson Mayor James B. Gibson. “He has a great way of working with people to forge common goals and we know that his leadership and vision will serve the Nevada League of Cities well as their president.”
The Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities was originally incorporated as the Nevada Municipal Association on October 30, 1959, with sixteen member cities. In 1995, the League By-Laws were amended to include membership from affiliates such as unincorporated towns, general improvement districts, and other municipalities.
Today the NLC is made up of 22 member entities from throughout the state with the goal, “to foster periodical conferences of city officials; disseminate knowledge of municipal affairs and government; to circulate publications on municipal affairs; to secure harmony of action among cities; and to render technical information and other services to the cities.”
