Henderson, Nev. – Today Deputy Police Chief Richard D. Perkins was named interim police chief, effective immediately. Perkins will oversee daily operations of the city of Henderson Police Department.

“Having someone with this amount of vast experience step into this role will support the City’s ongoing commitment to public safety," said City Manager Phil Speight. “Perkins is a 22 year veteran of the Henderson Police and knows this community well, and will be a seamless transition overseeing the police operations during this interim period.”

Perkins, a native of Southern Nevada, joined the Henderson Police Department in January 1984 as a patrol officer. He was selected as field training officer in 1987, assisting new recruits. Eighteen months later, he became a police investigator and was promoted to sergeant in 1991. He was named captain in 1995, serving as commander of the Investigations Division until his promotion to deputy police chief over the Operations Command in December 2000.

“It is a great honor to be selected during this time to help guide one of the finest police departments in the country. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the fine men and women of the Henderson Police Department,'' Perkins said. “I am confident the department is headed down the right path and will continue to provide excellent service and protection."

When Perkins joined the city, the Henderson Police Department was comprised of 50 officers. Today, the department has nearly 300 officers and will continue to grow under the voter-approved countywide tax initiative.

Perkins holds two Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in Criminal Justice and Political Science. He is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy. A Henderson resident from his early youth, Perkins graduated from Basic High School.
