Henderson, Nev. – The City of Henderson’s passport services reached the 5,000 mark on Monday, May 8. The full-service passport application acceptance program began in January 2003 making Henderson the first municipality to offer a passport program in the area.

Henderson resident Kristy Nuzzi was the customer who submitted the milestone application, and she was pleasantly surprised by the recognition. “I came to City Hall for my passport, and I’m glad I did,” said Nuzzi. “Everyone was so helpful, and it was a very easy process. I liked getting the photos taken at the same time, and the location is very convenient." Nuzzi is obtaining the passport for a milestone of her own: to celebrate her 30th birthday in Italy.

Nationally, there were more than 10 million passports issued last year, and 42,000 were processed at 33 acceptance facilities throughout southern Nevada. The City of Henderson Office of the City Clerk provides the service Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 240 Water Street within the Water Street District of downtown Henderson.

"We are a full service operation,” City Clerk Monica Martinez Simmons, CMC, said, “which means we can process new passport applications as well as provide the necessary photos, record identification, administer oaths, witness signatures and expedite the processing, all according to federal guidelines. When the U.S. Department of State sought agencies for the passport acceptance program a few years ago, we immediately responded because of the convenience it offers our citizens.”

The city of Henderson processes passport applications upon receipt when all the requirements are met, including proof of U.S. citizenship and valid photo identification. The documents are forwarded daily to the regional office of the U.S. Department of State, the only agency authorized to grant, issue or verify passports in the United States. The federal processing takes up to six weeks, and can be expedited in about two weeks with an additional fee for the state department. The standard adult U.S. passport, which is valid for 10 years, costs a total of $97.

Included in the cost is an execution fee that is set by the federal government and is currently $30. The city of Henderson can also provide the photos used in the passport for $10. Passport charges are a unique source of city revenue used towards providing efficient, ongoing services for Henderson residents and businesses.
