Henderson, Nev. – The City of Henderson, Nevada, has been named one of the top 20 cities in America by MONEY Magazine’s annual “America’s Best Places to Live” profile.
MONEY ranked Henderson number 20 in the profile, which is featured in the recently released August issue of the magazine. The article ranked the Top 90 small cities in the United States.
“We really see the City of Henderson as one of the premier cities in the southwest,” said Henderson Mayor James B. Gibson. “We work hard to provide the best quality of life for everyone who chooses to call Henderson home, so it’s certainly an honor to be nationally recognized as one of America’s best cities.”
The rankings of cities with a population between 50,000 and 300,000 are based on 38 quality-of-life indicators and six economic opportunity measures in the categories of ease of living, health, education, crime, park space and arts and leisure.
Additional factors included job markets, housing prices, schools and education, ambience, weather and taxes. Henderson scored their highest marks in the areas of education, parks and open spaces.
The City of Henderson was the third-largest city ranked in the Top 90. Only Plano, Texas (number 11) and Lincoln, Nebraska (number 60), had larger listed populations than Henderson’s.
Fort Collins, Colorado, – with a population of 128,000 – topped the annual listing. Henderson was the only city in Nevada to be included in the “Best Places to Live” category.
Born in America’s defense during World War II, Henderson was officially incorporated in 1953. However, it was during the 1990s that Henderson started making a name for itself once being named the fastest-growing city in the nation. In fact, Henderson – known for its master-planned communities and high-quality of living – has been at the front of Nevada’s growth spurt, growing from just 60,000 people in 1990 to currently over 250,000.
While MONEY listed Henderson with a population of just over 232,000, city projections have Henderson’s population over 250,000 to date with recent growth. According to Gibson, those numbers make the listing even more impressive.
“As any municipality grows, it becomes more difficult to manage that growth and maintain the quality of life that might exist in a smaller town,” said Gibson, a Henderson resident for more than 50 years. “We take great pride in how we’ve managed our growth. Henderson is well known for being a good, clean, safe place to raise a family, do business or retire and it’s nice that such a respected national publication like MONEY would recognize us for that. It’s a real credit to everyone who lives and works here and makes us what we are.”
