In honor of National Bike Month, the city of Henderson hosts the inaugural Discover Our Trails Scavenger Hunt, the community’s first bicycle scavenger hunt, during the whole month of May. The family-friendly mystery game features clues for three Henderson trails, including a special trail for mountain bikers. It’s free to participate.
“Henderson offers wonderful bicycling amenities throughout the community, especially our award-winning trails system,” said Mayor Andy Hafen “Throughout the month of May and beyond, we’re encouraging residents at every skill level to Bike Henderson, participating in a number of bicycling activities, including our own Discover Our Trails Scavenger Hunt.”
Kicking off Wednesday, May 1, bicyclists have until Friday, May 31 to finish the three scavenger hunt courses, which range from two to five miles roundtrip and are designed for all bicycling abilities. Five points are awarded for each completed hunt with an extra five points given to participants for cracking the clues to the challenge rider bonus trail, an optional intermediate ride for mountain bikers. Points are earned by finding and snapping photos of landmarks or markers uncovered by hints within the scavenger hunt riddles.
“Discover Our Trails is a fun way for families to spend time together,” continued Hafen. “The interactive detective game is a unique approach to promoting healthy, active lifestyles by combining mystery and entertainment with bicycling.”
Discover Our Trails participants must submit their scavenger hunt photos to BikeHenderson@cityofhenderson.com by the end of May. The email must contain the participant’s name with contact information, as well as the name of the trail completed in the scavenger hunt and photos.
Prizes are awarded to the top three finalists that completed the three trails. First place receives a Garmin GPS watch, second place gets a CamelBak hydration pack and third place receives a bicycle headlight. A $100 bike shop gift card is awarded to one winner who finished the challenge rider trail, in addition to the other three rides. All prizes are courtesy of a donation by the Henderson Community Foundation.
Discover Our Trails is one of many bicycling initiatives planned in 2013 that supports Henderson’s journey to become Southern Nevada’s first Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Cyclists. The city’s improving bicycling opportunities citywide, including increasing recreational activities, services and events for bicyclists, as well as making roadways safer.
