Henderson, Nev. – Henderson Police officers conducted checks of underage alcohol compliance at stores over the weekend to help ensure that minors are not able to buy alcoholic beverages.

Officers from the Community Relations Unit, with the assistance of underage volunteers, checked 78 convenience stores, grocery stores and liquor stores throughout the city of Henderson early Sunday. Of the 78 establishments, 74 did not sell alcohol to the underage person. However, four businesses did sell alcohol to the minor in violation of the Henderson Municipal Code 04.36.340, which prohibits the distribution of alcoholic beverages to minors.

The businesses that failed were:

  • CVS, 1551 W. Sunset Road
  • Green Valley Grocery, 902 S. Boulder Highway
  • Lee’s Discount Liquor, 4427 E. Sunset Road
  • Whole Foods, 100 S. Green Valley Parkway

The clerks were subject to a citation for serving an underage person and face a maximum penalty of six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. The owners or managers of a business that fails a second or third time can also be issued a citation and could face the revocation of their business license. Businesses that fail an alcohol compliance check generally are rechecked at some time in the future.

In addition, six businesses that had previously failed an underage alcohol compliance check were re-checked Sunday and passed. The four businesses that did fail Sunday failed a compliance check for the first time.

In conjunction with the federal Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws grant, the Henderson Police Department will continue its effort to reduce juvenile alcohol-related crimes and alcohol abuse by minors with this ongoing program of monitoring the liquor-selling establishments within the community.
