Woman Killed in Three-Car Wreck

Henderson, Nev. – A 68-year-old woman from Hawaii died late Sunday after the car she was riding in was struck head on by another car, the driver of which was arrested on DUI charges.
Jeffrey R. Phelps, 36, from Henderson, was booked into the Henderson Detention Center late Sunday on DUI with death, leaving the scene of an accident and hit and run charges.
Phelps was driving a Nissan Altima eastbound on Volunteer Boulevard near Executive Airport Drive Sunday about 7:45 p.m. when he ran into the back of a Toyota Rav4. Phelps then continued eastbound and struck a Toyota Camry head-on in a westbound lane. The 68-year-old woman was a passenger in the Camry and was airlifted to University Medical Center. She died from her injuries about 11:55 p.m. Sunday.
The driver and another passenger from the Camry and a passenger from the Rav4 were transported to St. Rose Dominican Hospitals – Siena Campus for treatment.
Following the collisions, Phelps was seen walking away from his car and was located near the accident.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release the woman’s name after her family has been notified.
The woman’s death was first traffic-related fatality in Henderson this year.
