City of Henderson Teams up with IRS, United Way and HopeLink for the Tax Season
City offers free tax preparation program to residents

March 03, 2014

Henderson, Nev. – The city of Henderson is partnering with the Internal Revenue Service, United Way and HopeLink to provide free tax assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Last year, the program helped more than 650 individuals and families in Henderson and surrounding communities complete their taxes and get more than $750,000 in income tax refunds.

The VITA program offers free preparation of federal and state income tax returns to low to moderate income families earning less than $52,000 per year. IRS certified volunteer preparers help to ensure the distribution of the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits to taxpayers who qualify.

HopeLink, a Henderson nonprofit social service agency, is one of 22 VITA program sites across the Las Vegas Valley. Eight of the 20 volunteers at the site are city of Henderson employees who donate at least four hours of their time every week. Each preparer is required to first complete at least 16 hours of training and pass a certification test.

Many VITA program participants use their refund for immediate needs, such as rent and everyday expenses. By opting to file their returns electronically, applicable refunds are automatically deposited into their checking/savings account, a process that can take less than 10 days.

“Filing taxes can be an intimidating and complex process and this program makes it easy for our residents to complete their return and take advantage of the credits they are due,” said Councilwoman Gerri Schroder. “I’m especially proud of our employees who volunteer their time to help families in our community.”

This free tax preparation service is available on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays at HopeLink, 178 Westminster Way, Henderson, Nev., 89015. Appointments can be made by calling (702) 566-0576, ext. 304, Monday through Thursday, or (702) 327-7855, evenings and weekends. Bilingual services are available.
