Henderson, Nev. – More Henderson pets found their way home, or into new homes, than ever before in 2013.

The Henderson Animal Control Bureau returned 774 lost animals to their owners, and adopted out more than 2,000 pets to new homes in 2013, an increase of 6.5 percent over the number of pets adopted in 2012. About 44 percent of all the lost animals taken into the Animal Care and Control Facility over the past year were adopted.

Henderson City Council passed a mandatory spay/neuter ordinance in August 2010 to reduce the number of unwanted puppies and kittens born every year. This ordinance has played a large part in reducing the bureau’s euthanasia rate from 45 percent in 2006 to 23 percent in 2013. The national average for euthanasia in animal shelters is approximately 65 percent, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

“Our goal is to reduce euthanasia rates even further by proactively finding ways to rehome pets,” explains Kathy Baker, Animal Control Facility Administrator. “We are working to increase adoptions through the city’s website, social media, and through cooperation with licensed rescue groups and other area shelters.”

The Henderson Animal Care and Control Facility’s medical staff performed 1,454 surgeries (primarily spays and neuters) in 2013, an increase of 143 surgeries over 2012. In addition, animal control officers responded to 10,658 calls for service in 2013, an increase of 635 calls over 2012.

The Henderson Animal Control Bureau works within the community to reduce animal suffering and distress, reunite lost pets with their owners, and facilitate pet adoptions. People interested in adopting a pet may visit the Henderson Animal Care and Control Facility at 300 E. Galleria Dr., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pets available for adoption can also be found online at cityofhenderson.com.
