Michael Mayberry is a lifelong resident of the Las Vegas Valley and a graduate of Bishop Gorman High School. He joined the Henderson Police Department as a reserve officer in 1976. He was hired as a patrol officer in 1978. He rose through the ranks and his assignments have included field training officer, detective, Investigation Division Commander and Support Division Commander. He is a graduate of the 180th Session of the FBI National Academy and the 29th Session of the Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar in Quantico, VA. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from UNLV. He was named acting Chief of Police in September 1999 after Chief Burn retired. On May 2, 2002, Mayberry was appointed Chief of Police by the Henderson City Council. During Chief Mayberry's term in office, Henderson Police Department joined an elite number of agencies to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
