Land Development

The objective of the Land Development division is to provide for the proper and orderly development of land within the City to protect the public interest, preserve the quality of life for existing and future residents, and provide a reasonable assurance of safety for lives and property.

Floodplain Management and New Development, the two sections of Land Development insure this objective is met by:

  • Assuring that all new developments meet accepted standards for design and construction for the public improvements including streets, sidewalks, water, sewer, storm drainage and flood control, streetlights, and fire protection;

  • To keep the public informed concerning flood hazards by maintaining the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Insurance Rate Maps and providing technical assistance and flood insurance information; and

  • By providing prompt and cost-effective solutions to problems which occur in existing developments including groundwater and drainage.

New Development reviews all new development plans and coordinates the review process with other City departments.

Floodplain Management seeks the reduction of potential flood losses by constructing by reviewing new development plans to insure they are protected from the effects of flooding and that they do not adversely impact other property.

Emergency responses during flooding is coordinated through the Land Development division.
