"When Children Are Present"
The city of Henderson Public Works Department will begin replacing existing school speed limit signs in March of 2011. Existing signs specify the exact times that school zone speed limits are in effect; the new signage will not have specific times but will instead read “When Children Are Present.” Work to change out approximately 500 school zone signs will begin at Taylor Elementary School, Brown Middle School and Basic High School in the east of Henderson and then continue to the west. The project is anticipated to be completed by December of 2011.
After the initial project cost of $20,000, the city estimates an annual savings of up to $10,000 in sign maintenance costs, incurred when changes in school bell times necessitated replacing hundreds of signs each year. Additionally, the city will have more flexibility in the placement of school crossing guards and traffic enforcement.
Research data indicates motorists drive slower through school zones marked by, “When Children Are Present” signs, resulting in increased pedestrian safety in school zones.
