Henderson to Launch Its Captain Kit Preparedness Campaign

December 18, 2018
Henderson, Nev. – The City of Henderson’s Office of Emergency Management is expanding its mandate to motivate and educate the community in all aspects of emergency preparedness to include elementary school-aged children. “The Captain Kit program was created because of an identified need to reach out to school-aged children to enhance their knowledge of emergency preparedness in their home and at school,” said City of Henderson’s Emergency Manager Jeremy Hynds. “The hope is to encourage children to take the knowledge they learn back to their family and ask questions about how prepared their family is for an emergency.”

Captain Kit presentations will cover possible emergencies and what to do to be prepared, why children and their families need to be prepared for any emergency, and how to create a “Treasure Kit” with food, water, flashlight, medicines, and other important items, as well as a special pet emergency kit.

The campaign will be rolled out through scheduled outreach efforts around the city as well as through the Safekey program within Henderson schools. “Our hope is for the program to be introduced to all K-5 schools in the next three years,” said Hynds.

To capture their attention, Captain Kit will have lots of goodies for children, including activity books, a video, colorful presentation, character temporary tattoos, character stickers, emergency preparedness kit list for home and pets, character trading cards, and a gold membership coin.

The Captain Kit program is the latest effort involving Henderson’s READY Crew, a volunteer-based group that assists the Office of Emergency Management with its Get READY! Stay READY! campaign. The READY Crew helps educate the public on readiness and emergency preparedness for individuals, families and businesses at events around the City of Henderson.
