Henderson, Nev. – On March 3, 2020 at approximately 9:00 a.m., a City of Henderson Police Officer was injured after his vehicle was struck while investigating a traffic collision.

Preliminary information indicates the officer was completing an accident report for a traffic collision that had occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m. near the intersection of N. Green Valley Parkway and E. Sunset Road.

While the officer was seated in his marked patrol unit with emergency lights activated, a driver of a 2018 white Hyundai travelling east on E. Sunset Road drove around a disabled vehicle from the previous crash and slammed into the occupied police vehicle. The force of the impact ejected the officer from his patrol vehicle.

Further investigation revealed the operator of the white Hyundai, 27-year-old Joseph Allen Smith, exhibited signs of impairment and was arrested for DUI and other traffic related offenses and booked into the Henderson Detention Center. Smith’s booking photo is attached.

The officer was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

The intersection of N. Green Valley Parkway and E. Sunset Road was closed by Henderson Police with the assistance of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for approximately 3.5 hours while Henderson Traffic Investigators completed the additional investigation.

As this is an open investigation, no further details will be released at this time.
