Ward IV - Councilman Dan H. Stewart
Professional Biography
Dan Stewart is a fourth-generation Nevadan with roots that run deep in his state and community. He has a diverse background in both the public and private sectors that includes engineering, real estate, banking, construction and public service.
In 1979, Dan, and his wife Mary, moved to Green Valley in Henderson as one of the first families in the new master-planned community. He worked for the family-owned construction company, Nevada Rock & Sand Company, and later ran a heavy-construction company. In 1988 Dan left to run Industrial Construction and Bonanza Materials, both located in Henderson.
In 1994 Dan became president and CEO of Basic Management Inc., the parent company of Basic Water Company, Basic Power Company, Basic Remediation Company, Basic Environmental Company, and the LandWell Company. After a decade with the company, Dan went to work for American Nevada Corporation where he was responsible for expanding the American Nevada Corporation commercial portfolio. He was a co-founder in 1998 of Valley Bank of Nevada which later merged into Community Bank of Nevada.
Councilman Stewart currently is the Vice President of Development for Gardner Company, the master developer for the UNLV Harry Reid Research and Technology Park in partnership with the UNLV Research Foundation. In addition, he is the President of Valley Construction Company, a general engineering contractor which has been recognized by the Associated General Contractors for Excellence in Sensitivity to Environment, History and Culture.
Dan Stewart was appointed to the Henderson City Council in January 2017, representing Ward IV and subsequently elected in 2019.
Councilman Stewart represents Henderson on the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) in which he is vice-chairman, the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, and the Clark County Debt Management Commission in which he is vice-chairman. In addition, Councilman Stewart serves on the Colorado River Commission of Nevada as an appointee from SNWA. He was a cofounder of Nevada State College and has served as chair of the Nevada State College Foundation for two years. He has also represented the city on the Board of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance.
Before joining the City Council, Councilman Stewart served by gubernatorial appointment on the State of Nevada Commission on Ethics from 2015 to 2016. He also received a gubernatorial appointment to serve on the Colorado River commission from 2016 to 2018. From 2012 to 2015, he served as vice chair of the City of Henderson Planning Commission as well as the District Chairman of the Eldorado District Boy Scouts of America. Dan served as a trustee on the St. Rose Hospital Foundation Board for 10 years. Stewart also has served on the Southern Nevada Water Authority Integrated Resource Planning and Integrated Water Planning Advisory Committees, the UNLV Engineering Advisory Council, and the Henderson Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee.
Councilman Stewart completed the Harvard University Advanced Management Development Program in 2003 and holds a master’s degree in Construction Engineering and Management from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Brigham Young University.
Councilman Stewart is proud to live in Henderson with his wife of 45 years. In his spare time Dan focuses on his family, church and hobbies including golf and flying.
