The award-winning City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is accredited through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and is committed to providing residents with a variety of life-enriching classes, workshops and events. These programs are hosted at 73 neighborhood and community parks, 11 aquatic facilities, and eight recreation centers (including two centers for adults 50+).

Accreditation

The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department has been reaccredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) for the third time, making it the only agency in Nevada to hold this prestigious designation and one of only 189 CAPRA accredited agencies in the United States.

Through compliance with 36 fundamental and 118 non-fundamental standards of excellence, CAPRA accreditation assures policy makers, department staff, and the public that an accredited park and recreation agency has been independently evaluated against established benchmarks as delivering a high level of quality. The City of Henderson demonstrated 100 percent compliance with all 154 standards.

Gold Medal Award

The City of Henderson received the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) in 2014 and 1999. The Gold Medal Award honors park and recreation agencies throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long‐range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development, and agency recognition. Each agency is judged on its ability to address the needs of those it serves through the collective energies of citizens, staff, and elected officials.

The City of Henderson is proud to announce the Parks and Recreation Department has been named a finalist for the 2023 Gold Medal Award. As part of the application process, the City was required to submit a five-minute video highlighting our programs and services.

Master Plan

The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Master Plan assists the City in planning for the future growth of the Henderson parks system and recreational facilities over the next ten years. The master plan is a critical component of the development of future parks, trails, facilities, programs, and services consistent with the vision and policies of the City of Henderson.

Professional Biography

Angela Summers

Angela Summers was named Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Henderson in 2024, after serving as Assistant Director since 2020. She was born and raised in Northern California and started her recreation profession as a lifeguard for the Greater Vallejo Recreation District. During her career, she has worked for recreation facilities in California, Hawaii, Japan, and most recently in Nevada. In 2003, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies from California State University, Sacramento and is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP).

Since 2008, Angela has served as the Pacific Southwest Region Representative on the board of directors for the National Aquatic Branch (NAB), a branch of NRPA, as a Vice-President, President, and Past President for the Nevada Recreation Parks Society, Swimming Lesson Committee Chair for the Southern Nevada Child Drowning Prevention Coalition, and Chair for the Leadership Institute of the Nevada Recreation & Park Society. She is currently serving as the Chair for the Directors Summit, a national workshop for Parks and Recreation professionals across the country.

In April 2008, Angela joined the City of Henderson’s Parks and Recreation Department and has brought an enormous amount of creativity and leadership to her department. With expertise in the areas of leadership, communication, management, internal and external customer service, Angela provides new perspectives and fresh ideas that promote growth and development within the parks and recreation industry. With her incredible team, Angela helps lead a $50M parks and recreation operation, which includes 72 parks, 180+ miles of trails, six recreation centers and two senior centers, 200+ full-time staff and 800-1,000 part-time staff. The City of Henderson is a two-time AAPRA National Gold Medal Award winning agency and the only CAPRA accredited agency in the state of Nevada.
