Naturally Occurring Asbestos
Earlier in 2015, the City of Henderson was approached by developers about the annexation of land in the Eldorado Valley. The City Council voted on June 2, 2015 to pursue annexation after an Annexation Agreement or a Development Agreement was reached with the developers regarding a number of issues in the area, including the potential existence of asbestos that had been identified by UNLV researchers in a recently published study.
The city has not annexed any land in the Eldorado Valley for development. Any annexation is still in discussion, and would only occur after the development of an acceptable agreement between the city and the developers on a variety of issues, including asbestos.
Asbestos exists in numerous forms in nature and is prevalent throughout the region and elsewhere in the United States. While there are currently no state standards regarding naturally occurring asbestos mitigation, the city is currently working with NDOT, the RTC and others regarding the potential existence of asbestos and what types of measures ought to be taken to mitigate any potential impacts to residents and workers in areas of concern, such as in the I-11 project corridor.
